Toby George, our company, is named after our grandson who was born on St George’s day 1993. The Our George Fish Shop is named after our own boat ‘Our George’, SM 278, whose crew nets and pots the channel waters from The Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne. They provide the ‘catch of the day’ displayed on the counter at our shop in Uckfield, East Sussex.
Neil and Val McDonald previously ran fishing boats and retail wet fish shops throughout East Sussex
before the luxury of a harbour existed. Their traditional ‘liptic’ and ‘lute’ stern wooden clinker-built
boats launched off the open beaches at Herbrand Beach, Cooden between Eastbourne and Hastings. Sadly,
quotas and ever increasing regulations legislated by the EEC have taken their toll, and this
traditional way of life is slowly disappearing. Although Val and Neil have retired, the company has
still retained fishermen on SM 278 trained in the traditional and conservational ways of netting and
potting; Ian Holebrooke, being one, following in his father’s steps who fished on these same grounds
40 years ago.
Val and Neil, in retirement, remain active in administering this website pointing the way to where customers can access the taste they used to enjoy by buying ‘fish straight from the boat’ now on sale on the counters of Our George Fish Shop, Uckfield.
